The 2013 Motor State Challenge had another incredible turnout with 105 participants signed up for this year's event. Some of the top Pro-Touring cars from the U.S. and Canada were on hand and ready to flex their muscles.
The event kicked off Thursday afternoon at Lane Automotive/Motor State Distributing with driver check-in, meet and greet, facility tours, and a drivers' meeting to familiarize everyone with the schedule of events for the Challenge.
At 5:30, eighty cars departed the Motor State parking lot, led by a dedicated group of Berrien County Sheriff Motorcycle Brigade Deputies. The uninterrupted cruise route took participants through the winding back roads and around several of the areas beautiful inland lakes. Final destination was the 5-Mile Drive-In Theater, north of Dowagiac where the Motor State Challenge staff had a wonderful meal prepared for all to enjoy. The night's activities were capped off with a special showing of the movie "American Graffiti".
A full day of road course time trials was on the schedule for Friday at GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan where 95 cars were on the grounds to compete. Slightly overcast skies and cooler temperatures made for absolutely great track conditions. The South Bend Region SCCA group oversees the GingerMan event and they wasted no time getting everyone run through tech inspection and rounded up for a drivers' meeting prior to heading out on the track. After several hours of road course fun, Friday's event wrapped up right around 5:00, just as a heavy rain shower started to move in.
Competitors were up bright and early Saturday morning to take part in a full day of autocross in the Lake Michigan College parking lot. This event was also set up and directed by the South Bend Region SCCA. A total of 75 cars remained in contention for the Motor State Challenge Championship which would be determined later that afternoon. Because of the increased number of cars participating in the autocross, the field was divided into three groups. Each group ran five timed laps to accumulate their final points. Our dedicated Relay for Life Team once again provided a great lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs before the final group of competitors made their runs. Just as the last cars in the final group were making their 5th lap around the challenging course, the rain drops started to fall helping make the decision to finish the event a little early.
By 3:30 the times and points had been tallied and the following participants were presented with their hardware.
